The Applecross Peninsula

An appeal by the Applecross Historical Society

The Applecross Historical Society is appealing to everyone who has a link, either past or present, with the peninsula for donations to help the Society achieve its aim of preserving the culture and history of this unique, remote and beautiful area.

Applecross was one of the earliest Christian settlements in Scotland, and is considered by scholars to be second in importance to Iona. In the year 673 the Irish Monk Maelrubha founded his Christian settlement on the land between the river and Beinn a'Chlachain. He declared the surrounding area a Sanctuary, and even today, Applecross is known as A'Chomraich - the Sanctuary. For fifty-nine years, Maelrubha maintained his monastery and, using Applecross as his base, spread the gospel from Applecross to Lochcarron and into Easter Ross.

Ongoing funds are required to cover annual operational and maintenance costs of the Heritage Centre, which charts the history and culture of Applecross and records St Maelrubha's achievements.

Please help by becoming a member of the Historical Society. If only a few of those with Scots ancestry scattered throughout the world joined the Historical Society, the future of the heritage centre, and all it represents, would be secured.

Membership is £5.00 per year.   Please click here to print out a membership form.

There is excellent booklet available about Applecross entitled "A Glimpse of History" written by Ian Mackenzie, Archivist for the Historical Society. Copies of this booklet are available locally. To obtain a copy by post, please send a stamped, self addressed envelope to Janet Mackay, The Bungalow, Camusterrach, Applecross, Strathcarron, Wester Ross, IV54 8LU together with a cheque valued £2.50 which includes postage & packing.

The Applecross Historical Society is a company limited by guarantee, and is a registered charity.
