Heritage Centre Curator
At the end of 2010, Applecross Historical Society welcomed a full-time Heritage Curator. Gordon Cameron, an Applecross native, took up his position on 29th November, and will be based in the Heritage Centre for the next three years. This is a fantastic opportunity for the Historical Society and the local community to progress a number of major initiatives which will gather together the archives and stories of the Applecross peninsula and its people, wherever they may be, and make them available in the Heritage Centre and on the Internet.
Among the key projects conceived by the Applecross Historical Society which Gordon will oversee are a digitisation project to preserve the Historical Society’s archives; a graveyard mapping initiative which will record information on and about the graves at Clachan Church; and a place names project which will see a major drive to record as much information about the iconic names of the area as possible.
The post, and through that the projects, is being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the European Rural Development Fund (ERDF) through the Applecross Landscape Partnership Scheme ( ALPS ).
