Background
The Historical Society was established in 1998 by a group of local people, who were concerned that the historical and cultural heritage of this unique and isolated Highland community was in danger of being lost in a rapidly changing world.
It was felt there was a pressing need to gather memories, stories and artefacts, to provide a mechanism to preserve, curate, and store them, and to make them available for this generation and future generations.
The early work of the Society focused on gathering these memories, obtaining and fully upgrading a building from the Applecross Trust to house the heritage centre.
The opening of the Heritage Centre took place on Good Friday, 18th April, 2003.

Between 2010 and 2015 the society received funding to employ a curator, Gordon Cameron, who applied his local knowledge (and Gaelic language), academic discipline and professional skills to the improvement of the Heritage Centre and deliver some research projects. The Society has been successful in obtaining grants for this and subsequent work, and in particular has enjoyed an ongoing relationship with Bòrd na Gàidhlig most recently for the War Project.
The directors of the Historical Society are Fiona Mackenzie, Catriona McCowan, Ruairidh Cameron, Michael Summers, Annabel Macrae and Alan Gillies. All are Applecross based.
The directors were delighted to launch this new website in July 2021. We are very grateful to Emma Noble for her design work, and to Alan Gillies for drawing together much of the content. We also appreciate the contribution of Roddy MacLean on Gaelic matters, and Annie Macdonald who provided the quality landscape photographs. Finally we appreciate the help from Museums and Galleries Scotland who have assisted with financial support as part of their Covid Recovery and Resilience response.
The Historical Society is a registered charity (SC030267) and a registered Company (SC208619).
